Archery Is Here! — Our Family’s First Step Into Archery
Our daughter has been asking us for a while about getting into archery. After plenty of hints (and a birthday coming up), we decided it was the perfect time to introduce her to the sport. The goal wasn’t just a gift — we wanted something active, skill-building, and something we could potentially do together as a family.
Getting Her First Bow
We headed to our local archery shop, Full Draw Archery, to see what would fit her best. The team there was fantastic to work with — knowledgeable, patient, and great with beginners.
They fitted her with a Genesis Mini compound bow, which is specifically designed for younger archers and beginners. Within minutes she was flinging arrows downrange and absolutely loving it.
The only catch?
The color she wanted wasn’t in stock, so it had to be ordered from the manufacturer. That meant a couple weeks of waiting — which honestly just built the excitement.
Picking Up the Bow (And Making It a Family Hobby)
When the bow finally arrived, we went back to the shop so she could:
• Pick it up properly fitted
• Get a beginner lesson from the shop owner
• Learn safe handling and shooting basics
While she was working through her lesson, my wife and I started talking…
Why should she have all the fun?
We decided to get sized up ourselves just to see what options were out there.
Three Bows Later…
About 3½ hours later, we walked out with:
• One very excited kid
• Two newly committed beginner archers
• And three brand new bows total
What started as a birthday present turned into a full family hobby.
No regrets.
Why Archery Has Been Awesome So Far
A few early takeaways:
• It’s surprisingly relaxing
• It gets us outside together
• There’s a strong “progression” element (always improving form and accuracy)
• Great mix of technical skill + fun
And honestly — it’s just cool learning something completely new together.
What’s Next
We’re planning to:
• Spend more time at the range
• Dial in our gear and technique
• Share lessons learned here on the site
• Possibly get into backyard practice setups
If you’re considering archery as a hobby — especially as a family activity — I’d absolutely recommend visiting a good local pro shop first. The guidance makes a huge difference.
More updates coming as we continue learning.
